I am sitting in my new country bedroom looking out into the snowy woods as I write. Seven, yes seven, deer are gently grazing outside my window. (The deer is my spirit animal!)

As many of you know, in 2016 my Nia classes were few and far between because The Dance Space closed, other studios closed, and I didn’t have a regular place to teach. Then I had the extraordinary opportunity to live in Austria in September and October so I could help care for my 2-year-old granddaughter while my daughter prepared to give birth to her second child.

In November I packed everything and prepared to move from one coast to the other. I flew from Seattle to Charlottesville on December first and stayed in four homes before landing in this sweet place in the woods.

It’s now the second week in January. I have Nia classes in place for Sunday mornings and I will be teaching once a month in a few other studios in the area. I have two wellness mini-retreats on the calendar and two special New Year’s Intention Setting Nia classes scheduled. My holistic health coaching clients can reach me by phone even though I’m in the woods! It feels good to be here.

Last year, I mindfully put my USANA Health Sciences business (the global nutritional company I partner with) aside while focusing on other aspects of life and business. It’s an important part of my income and after making such a big move, it’s now time for me to focus on USANA again.

I have questioned and asked God many times over the past year if partnering with USANA is still my path or I am doing it just because I need the residual income. I repeatedly get the answer to continue to offer these nutritional products to those who are a good match for them. I believe deeply in their quality and effectiveness. Otherwise I wouldn’t put my name by them or want to educate people about them. And as this is part of my income, in full disclosure, I get a commission on products I sell.

So with that said, I really want to tell you about VITAMINS! (You’ll hear more about wild turkeys and cardinals in a bit.)

I’ve had a Word document entitled, “Vitamins, who needs them?” in my files for about four years. The file includes well-researched citations from many third party sources about the quality of various supplements. I planned to write an article with that title but I felt compelled to entitle this one “Deer, Wild Turkeys, Cardinals & VITAMINS”. (You’ll understand the title more once you read to the end!)

I am now ready to share with you what I know about vitamins. I want you to feel nourished by what you read. And, as always, I invite you to let your intuition guide your way through, what could often be called, “The Vitamin Maze”.

Here’s what I really, really want you to know about vitamins:

1. I sell vitamins! And I have the knowledge to help you choose the ones that best match your needs.*

2. I want you to know what I didn’t know ten years ago about vitamins but what I know now. I’ve been working under the guidance of Dr. Christiane Northrup for over a decade and have learned SO much about this aspect of nutrition. Believe me, I have sorted through the vitamin maze.

3. I want you to know how essential (little pun here, as our multivitamin is called “CellSentials”) high quality supplements can be for your health.

4. I want you to know how supportive USANA’s supplements have been to me, my family, and to my customers/clients/friends who use them to support their health.

5. I want you to know what to look for when selecting a vitamin–because all vitamins are SO NOT ALIKE! And I want you to know why USANA’s vitamins are just so darn good:

They use pharmaceutical grade GMP, Good Manufacturing Practices. That translates to stringent manufacturing processes NOT required in the supplement industry. 6. I want you do know that the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA’s) are so outdated. The RDA is the lowest level of nutrient intake necessary to prevent deficiencies rather than a level that promotes optimal nutrition.

7. I want you to know that even eating organic foods doesn’t give us the vitamins and minerals that they once supplied back in the 1900s. For example, you would need to eat eight oranges today to get the nutrients in an orange you would have eaten years ago. Our farming practices, soil depletion, and environmental changes have been detrimental to our ability to grow nutrient dense foods.

8. I want you to know that if you live in a world with stress (pause here to take a deep breath) that our cells get bonked around, causing free radical damage–the technical term for oxidative damage. This makes it more important than ever to support our cells with antioxidants (vitamins) and minerals to support ongoing cellular repair. (And this combination of vitamins and minerals needs to be in a specific form. Randomly taking B vitamins, calcium tablets, and other combinations may result in a relative deficiency rather than optimal support.)

9. I want you to know that all vitamins are NOT alike. Yes, I said that before, but I really want you to hear it. I have found such value in these vitamins and I wouldn’t be without them. They have supported my health (which has been excellent) for ten years. Sometimes I want to shout this from rooftops but instead, I thought I’d write it here for you to see. I am passionate about eating well, getting pleasure from food, AND taking good supplements.

10. And I want you to know . . . About a week before I was to leave Austria in late October, my daughter, Molly, asked if I might be able to stay a week or so longer. Of course I never wanted to leave these two precious little granddaughters–the little one just a week old. But when Molly asked me to consider staying, my first thought was not about how crazy it would be stay when I needed to go home to pack up and move a month later. I didn’t even think about the cost of the change fee for my plane ticket. My first thought (and I didn’t say this out loud . . .) was, “Oh no! I can’t stay! I don’t have enough vitamins!”

These vitamins are not magic pills, they don’t make me fly around like Super Woman, but they sure have supported my overall health and energy in a way that is truly measurable. I want this for you too.

Shifting from Manual to Automatic

2008 Toyota

My “new” car

Let me tell you up front, I am not a car person. I just like my car to be safe, get good gas mileage, have a way to play some music, and for it to get me where I want to go. So, several months ago when I replaced my old car with a 2008 Toyota Corolla, the first automatic car I ever owned, it was such a surprise to me as to how much I loved it!

I named her Grace. I love that name and all it reflects. More on that later . . .

My old car really was pretty old. I reluctantly sold my 1994 Toyota Corolla after driving it for 22 years and over 280,000 miles. It had a manual transmission and the stick shift was a part of my driving life.

I have been driving a stick shift since I learned to drive in 1965. Of course I’ve driven plenty of rental cars that were automatic, but I had only purchased cars with a manual transmission. It’s what I knew.

About a week after I had been driving my new car, I pulled up to a stop sign. After simply moving my right foot from the gas to the brake, I began to cry. That moment, I suddenly saw this whole shift from manual to automatic as a glaring symbol of my life up until that point. I worked somewhat hard while I was driving and realized that I had been working really hard for most of my life. I just thought that’s how life was. I was often “doing it myself” and taking all kinds of energy to shift from this gear to that gear. Now I know, it just doesn’t have to be that hard! (Life OR driving a car!)

So, I’m slowly learning that life can be a little more automatic. I can keep my eyes on the windshield of life and continue to move forward safely and mindfully. And maybe I just don’t need to fuss so much with so many gears in between. And maybe I can enjoy the time in between by just being, or observing, or by listening more.

Speaking of listening, I love playing music when I drive. Before signing the papers to purchase this car, I of course checked out the sound system. (You may want to know I also had my mechanic check out the other important parts of this car!) I grabbed a CD from my old car–a mix of my favorite spiritual tunes. I was pleased with the speakers and how great it sounded. I then turned off the music to go into the car dealer’s office and completed the purchase.

I mentioned that I named my car Grace. The first time I put my hands on the wheel and started my car after I officially owned it, you’ll never believe what music sweetly emerged from the CD. The lyrics were, and I’m not kidding, “You are held in the hands of grace.”* Okay God, I am listening!

I really like this shift from manual to automatic.

Letting Go

It had once been my nature to cling ferociously to the belief that I was powerful enough to change the thinking of family members, friends, and even entire university committees. I am mighty powerful—but not in that way. I know that my true power comes from honestly and compassionately speaking my truth with integrity, kindness, and compassion and then letting go of the outcome. And it’s especially important to let go of the outcome. Pain has always resulted when I got in there and tried to force that oversized round peg into a very small square hole.

Trusting (rather than hoping) that things will unfold with ease in a way that is best for all involved will help as you prepare to truly let go. You may want to consider replacing the word hope with the word trust. Hope often implies something we wish might happen in the future. Trust can be a more optimistic and affirming way toward creating a specific result. And sometimes, it’s appropriate to really, really hope.

A real lesson in trusting and letting go came when my father was living his last few years of life with Alzheimer’s disease. My dear, rational, calm, clear thinking dad would tell me stories of flying boxcars that took him to work (and back) and he would tell me that wherever he landed, his bed would be right there too! The first time he told me this, I felt like my heart was bleeding tears. I felt desperate to bring him back into my reality. “Dad,” I softly pleaded, “You know that part of your brain that isn’t always connecting quite right? Well, that’s what’s happening now and that story isn’t really true.” I thought I was controlling the situation quite nicely. What an illusion!

When I let go and realized that his reality was his reality and totally different from mine, I began to find peace. I let go—and met him where he was, not where I wanted him to be. On one of our last walks together, I said, “Dad, tell me more about the boxcar with wings.” His face lit up as he described how this unique train took off and landed so smoothly and how much fun it was to ride it. Dad had been a railroad engineer so the added speed created by the airplane wings must have been quite a delight for him! And my delight came when I was able to let go and be with him right where he was. For a while after his death, I spent time wishing I had met him there sooner. Now I know I did the best I could at the time. I know he knows it too.

Anthropologist Ralph Blum said, “Relinquishing control is the ultimate challenge for the spiritual warrior.” We have a choice to cling to thoughts and beliefs that keep us stuck, in pain or in the illusion of control—or, we can let go, and let God handle the details. It’s your choice.

The Space In Between

spaceinbetweenA few days ago, the management of the beautiful dance space where I have been teaching Nia for nine years gave us a week’s notice to cancel further classes and return our keys. My last class there will be Saturday morning, December 20. When I read the email notification, I immediately went into a very spiritual mode of thinking. “Ahh, everything will be okay! I wonder what’s next?” Within five minutes my mind took me to incredibly human thoughts (not so spiritual) and then I circled around to the spiritual view again. I’ve gone through shock, anger, acceptance, confusion, sadness, and denial. My grief is still present. But I am settling pretty deep into acceptance. I am keenly aware that, if this is one my biggest problems of the year, I’m very lucky.

What I want to share with you is the feeling of peace that is coming to me (in spurts) now. It’s similar to the feeling I had when we sold my parents’ home in the late 90s. My mother had died in 1996, two years later one of my younger sisters died, and then my dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and could no longer live alone. It was time to sell the family home and pack up 53 years of a household.

As I wrote in chapter 25 of my Wellness Wisdom book, I vividly remember the feeling of sitting by myself in the family living room as I gazed at all that was around me. There was the family Bible on the table by my dad’s favorite chair, my mom’s music box collection, a small bust of Jackie Kennedy, family photographs on the dining room wall, and the old maple stereo console we’d had since the sixties. Anticipating the next four days of packing and removing remnants of our family’s life together in my childhood home, I began to cry. It seemed like a task I was too young to be doing and nothing seemed to make any sense. How would it feel to never come home again?

After praying for a few minutes, I felt a deep sense of peace wash over me. Spirit was clearly at work here, as I felt I was receiving a profound gift that enabled me to move through this passage with grace, strength, and trust. This gift proved to be more valuable than any household item in our lovely family home. I realized that it wasn’t the stuff, it wasn’t the dishes, and it wasn’t the doors or the walls or my old bedroom that was important at that moment. It wasn’t the living room where I stood for photos in my prom and wedding dresses or groaned when mom wanted to take one more family picture. It wasn’t the things—it was the space in between that was important. The gift was the realization that the space in between all this stuff was where I had learned to love. And that love was something I was able to safely pack with me and keep for the rest of my life. My tears stopped and I thanked God for the gift of this peaceful insight, and for the gift of such loving parents.

And now after nine precious years, I am leaving The Dance Space—unexpectedly. This space was like a home to me and to many students and teachers in our Nia Seattle community. It seems that here too, it was the space in between where we danced and laughed and played and cried and expressed joy and love. It was the space in between where we connected as dancers, friends, supported each others’ life events, and sometimes danced and donated to send healing and resources to places throughout the world.

I notice the similarities with leaving my family home and leaving The Dance Space now. It was the space in between where I found a loving Nia family that was always there for me as I celebrated birthdays and holidays without my children and grandchildren at my side. I will take all of that with me and I don’t even have to pack it!

I will take with me the feeling and energy of the love that we generated there. I offer gratitude for every student who walked through that door. I offer gratitude for each of the (over 1,000) classes  that I had the honor of teaching there. I offer gratitude for all the workshops held there. I offer gratitude to each of my Nia teaching colleagues for sharing their gifts there. I offer gratitude for the experience of teaching a Nia class in April with my daughter and granddaughter in the class–three generations doing Nia together, I offer gratitude for the space and for the neighborhood. I will leave the studio free and clear to serve the next people to enter. I will clear the space and take all my personal energy with me. That will leave my body, mind, spirit, and emotions free to embrace the next dancing steps; and lead me to the perfect studio space so I can continue to share my beloved Nia practice. My wish is for my students and our Nia community to be open to doing the same.

Affirmations for Your Wellness Path

Affirmations for Wellness

We have over 60,000 thoughts a day and most of them were also bonking around in our heads yesterday. These thoughts most often reflect our subconscious beliefs. So, the power in a positive affirming statement is that it can slowly but surely become a welcome part of those repetitive thoughts and eventually become a belief. You can affirm something peaceful or affirm something to create worry or suffering. You get to choose. And although most people find daily affirmations make their lives feel better, they do not “work” simply by saying, “I am getting healthier every day” while you are sitting on the sofa eating bonbons. There’s a saying I love, “Pray and move your feet!”

Here are the “Affirmations for Wellness” I share in my Wellness Wisdom book.  At the end of these affirmations, you’ll find resources to support you in reprogramming your subconscious beliefs, which are about 95% of your thoughts. I think of affirmations as a way of “recording over” the old beliefs. Have fun in your own personal recording studio!

Eggshells, Loving-Kindness, and Observettes

Eggshells

It recently dawned on me that any time I have felt like I was walking on eggshells, I was actually the one that had put them there. Has that been true for you too?

Looking back, I now realize I had put those imaginary eggshells there because I had a fear of speaking my truth. But not anymore . . . I now have the intention to communicate in a loving, kind, and timely manner—even when it’s difficult. It is my intention to speak directly to the person (rather than text or email). And here’s the important part; I need to let go of the result.

Going back to the eggshells for a moment, sometimes those eggshells may be there to protect us from harm. Sometimes we intuitively know that it may not be safe for us to speak our truth to someone who may not be able to access his or her own highest and best self. In this case, I encourage you to seek professional support for handling this situation and creating empowering ways to stay safe, grounded, and to not feel like a victim.

At other times, those eggshells might appear when we are afraid to speak the truth (with loving-kindness and respect) to a boss, co-worker, friend, or family member who we think holds power over us. Okay, so you may not want to lose your job or your inheritance, but do you want to be treated poorly? We teach people how to treat us. If there are patterns of behavior that have created well-worn (rather than wellness-worn) paths, consider changing the destination on your GPS. In other words, if you’re walking on eggshells, you might want to walk down a different path.

I’ve also been consciously observing negative energy or situations and realizing that I can either absorb it (which feels awful) or pause and lovingly and without judgment, simply observe it all. Oh, the observing feels so much better! My good friend, Donna, would call that being an “observette.” Would you rather absorb it or observe it? Do you want pain? Or do you want peace?

Tate’s Tips for Becoming a Loving Observette

1. Observe, rather than absorb stressful feelings and situations.

2. Speak the truth with kindness, clarity, and compassion.

3. Let go of the result.

4. Teach people how to treat you.

5. Seek support when dealing with someone who is capable of

inflicting physical harm.

 

Note: I wrote this article a few years ago but was compelled to share it again now. In the past few months I have heard more people expressing sadness and discomfort about feeling it was never a good time to say what was really on their minds. I still have feelings like this, although I find it to be less and less as the years pass. These five steps above have been a good guide for me. Wishing you peace.

The spiritual component of wellness is highly individual, as each of us can choose to know God (or whatever you call the Divine) and create our spiritual practice through the lens of our own religious, spiritual, and cultural beliefs.  May this prayer bring you peace and gentleness today.

 


My Prayer for You

May you see the infinite possibilities that exist with each sunrise.

May you make wise choices that nourish your mind, body, and spirit.

May you allow your soul the freedom to express who you really are.

May you allow yourself to love greatly and be greatly loved.

May you know that good self-care ultimately supports all those around you.

May you discover peace-filled solutions in the opportunities of conflict.

May you allow yourself time to grieve.

May you use your gifts and talents to create a better world.

May you listen to others with ears of compassion.

May you forgive yourself and others for any behaviors or beliefs that have caused pain.

May you feel God’s presence in every cell of your body.

Steps to Take If You Want to Get to Know God Better

1.  Create quiet time each day. You can start by taking just one minute before you get out of bed. Then gradually add to this precious ritual or practice as you begin your day. Some people like to light a candle, read from a holy text, play spiritual music, or just quietly breathe. Pick something that works for you. Treasure and protect that time. Quiet time for some may come, if only briefly, after you fall into bed after a long day. Breathe. Open your heart. Listen. God’s there.

2.  Explore places where you feel closest to God and hang out there when you can. Examples include but are not limited to: churches, synagogues, mosques, chapels, temples, beaches, forests, mountains, with your family, or in your garden.

3.  Take time to talk with God. And then, take time to listen to God. You’ll love the results. Praying doesn’t change God—it changes us.

4.  Remember that what you focus on expands. So, focusing on God can provide a greater awareness of the Divine in your daily life. This doesn’t mean you need to become a monk or priestess! It just means that the more you look for good and God, the more you’ll discover both.

ARE YOU READY FOR MORE PEACE TO ENTER YOUR HEART AND LIFE?

It seems like a good time to share an excerpt from the “Practice Peace” chapter in my Wellness Wisdom book to offer you a generous helping of nourishing peace.

Peace begins at home, home within the center of each of us. Our peaceful state of mind can then be extended to our family, friends, community, and the world. It can even be extended to people who don’t believe as we do. If we each take steps to promote this harmony, we could eventually see peace reach epidemic proportions.

It is often easy to condemn groups of people who are at war with each other. We may shake our heads wondering why “they” can’t live in peace. But are we living in peace? Are we at peace with ourselves? People creating terror hold a grudge against people who do not think like they do. Do we harbor grudges against family, former partners, coworkers, or neighbors? I believe if each of us takes the steps necessary to truly practice peace “at home,” within our bodies and souls, then it will be easier to sustain a peace consciousness throughout our entire planet.

EVERY DAY, YOU CAN CHOOSE TO CREATE PEACE
WITHIN YOUR OWN HEART.

When listening to the radio or watching the evening news, you can take deep breaths and a moment to pray for peace. You might even choose to create a ritual of peace-thinking in your daily life. For example, every time you stop at a red light, it could be a signal to think peace and be peace. I love the peace bumpers stickers I see when I’m driving too. And I giggle out loud every time I see the one that says, “Envision Whirled Peas”!

I invite you to join me in mindfully taking time to pray for peace, within ourselves first and then throughout the world. Whether you walk through the doorway of your own home or through the metal doorway in airport security, dare to be the carrier of peace.

I was introduced to Don Miguel Ruiz’s book, The Four Agreements, in 1999 at my very first Nia intensive training. In Nia, we are encouraged to use these agreements as “Energy Allies,” not only our practice–but in our daily lives.* They have worked so well for me over the years so I thought I would share them here for you! And, oh yes, I actually think there are FIVE agreements — you’ll find I’ve added one.

*The day I posted this (6/29/15) I received a lovely email response to this piece from Nia co-creator, Debbie Rosas. She reminded me that these agreements spring from the ancient wisdom of shamans. She wrote, “The origin of these came to Carlos and I before the book was written. They are ancient made modern.” Thank you, Debbie, for wrapping Nia in the sacred cloak of these principles! They have added so much peace to my life.

The Four Agreements (+1!)

1.  Be Impeccable with Your Word

Your word is powerful and sacred. Impeccable is defined as “in accordance with the highest standards of propriety; faultless.” I think of this concept as being honest, kind, and succinct way to speak. Choosing to be impeccable with your word is a mindful choice.

Think and speak loving words. I understand this agreement includes our self-talk and how we keep the agreements we make with ourselves. My self-talk no longer includes things like, “Oh, Susan, you are so stupid!” My body/mind would hear that and respond accordingly!

2.  Don’t Take Anything Personally

Release any sense of self-pity or self-importance. Somewhere I heard that an unexpected “NO” to a request might result in NO = New Opportunity. Ruiz says, “Nothing other people do is because of YOU. It is because of themselves.”  Oh, how I have found this to be true! Clearly, sometimes it’s quite a challenge to not take something personally. In the times I have found myself starting to feel hurt or offended by someone’s words or actions,  I have been able to shift the painful energy immediately into peace if I am aware enough to remember this agreement. It’s such a choice, but we have to remember to make it!

3. Make No Assumptions

Making assumptions, especially if you assume the worst, can sometimes dim your light and deplete your energy. If you can note and then minimize your inner dialogue you will probably feel better.

Honoring this agreement helped me to stop making up unsettling stories about what people might be thinking about me or something I did. Years ago, after I shared a concern about “what will people think?” to one of my dear friends, her pragmatic and loving reply stopped me in my tracks.  “Susan, people don’t really think about you that much!”  I laughed so hard and felt such relief!

Can you recall the last time you made an assumption and spent all that time in your head and it wasn’t fun at all? Next time you can make up a better story!   

4. Always Do Your Best

Do the best you can at the time with what you have to work with.  A year from now, your best will look different than today, and that’s okay! Lovingly observe yourself to assess whether you are doing your best. In Nia we call this the “Loving Witness.” My friend calls it being an “Observette!”

Trust yourself and take action.

Changes that are forced into being
are always temporary.
But changes that are loved into being are permanent.

5.  Be the Place Where Love Shows Up

This is the agreement I added to Ruiz’s list and I must admit, it’s my favorite. This energy ally is the connective tissue that holds a sacred container for all the others.

When your actions are motivated by love,
your energy multiplies and accumulates.

Amen to that, Deepak! Now doesn’t that make you want to be the place where love shows up?

In your work life, love what you do as you provide any kind of service. I have met people who cleaned the floors where I worked who offered a loving light and kindness while they pushed the mop. They might appear to be from the maintenance department, but to me, they were sparks of love making our work place look and feel more beautiful.

One of the best quotes I’ve ever read about love (I have shared this at the wedding ceremonies I have been honored to officiate) sums up this fifth agreement:

LOVE
You are not meant to search for it,
You are not meant to wait for it,
You are meant to generate it.

Whatever task is ours to do at the time, we can choose to do it with loving kindness and service. When in doubt, ask: What would love do now?
