Praise for Suan Tate’s Nia Moving to Heal Class

  • I am a 64-year-old female with multiple myeloma. Nia was so helpful when I was newly diagnosed, and it continues to be especially through the pandemic. It’s a great combination of dance, movement, music, flexibility, and stamina. Nia has also helped me connect with other people who are going through many challenges like myself. I’m so grateful that I connected with Susan Tate. Susan is one of the loveliest people I ever met. Caring, positive, energetic, and nurturing make Susan so special. I have recommended Nia to my health team, friends, and family. Nia has made my physical therapy sessions much easier because of the flexibility and balance that are a part of Nia routines. I have also introduced Nia to the physical therapy staff because they were impressed with my capabilities. Thank you to the UVA Cancer Center so very much for supporting this program.

  • Susan Tate’s Nia classes are not only so good for the body, in terms of moving in a happy, fluid way, but they’re an absolute balm for any troubled mind. Susan exudes joy and compassion and brings to everyone an appreciation for what their bodies can do and, so essential, a reminder to be grateful and focus on what we do have. The result is an elevated mood, confidence, and optimism—just what recovering/recovered cancer patients need!

  • Susan presents an energizing and fun class suitable for all levels. Dancing with Susan gave me permission to begin to move again. Her classes encourage me to rediscover the joy of moving muscles and limbs to music, while embracing the joy of being alive.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you for your practice/ministry/love! It is So healing and meaningful. Honestly, I feel so blessed to be in our online community, and my peace after each one of the classes I have been able to attend lasts through my entire day.

  • The Nia Moving to Heal class motivates me to get up and move, in class and between classes! It’s helped me to stay more focused on much needed self-care and healing. Classes may bring me joy, hope, peace, and sometimes tears as it provides a physical and emotional safety net to explore what my body needs and how to best support myself. I’ve learned to be more in the present and open while the class and instructor gives me useful tools that I call on to help support friends on their own cancer journey. For all this and more, I am grateful. My energy and ability to provide this support and encouragement with frequent calls, texts, and video sessions is enhanced with the support and energies I receive via the Nia classes and self-care lessons learned including attempts at my personal wellness journey. THANKS, and THREE CHEERS+ for the program,

  • Nia is TERRIFIC! Try it! Expand your body, mind, and spirit all at the same time. Nia is difficult to describe. To me, Nia is a dance class that introduces the dancer/exerciser to a wide variety of movements, music, sensations, and positive healing thoughts all in a loving, uplifting manner – coming from a wide array of disciplines. Susan Tate is one of the most loving and creative people I’ve had the luxury to meet. Join her for healthy movement and thoughts, and fun and intriguing music. There are always wonderful surprises in movements and music, and healing in mindfulness and inspirations. It’s all positive and loving. As Susan often reminds us, if a movement is not right for us, change it. Be kind to yourself—allow yourself to not know and do every move. I had to do this and drop a perfectionistic mindset, so I could thoroughly enjoy the moment. And if a word she says is not right for you, she encourages us to change it. It’s all about you and your health … and you’re truly loving yourself. I look forward to classes. Really miss them when I can’t make it. And on the days I make it, I feel good all day long. Thanks, Susan and Nia Moving to Heal.

  • I have been attending Nia Moving to Heal classes with Susan Tate through the UVA Cancer Center since they began in 2017. I know exercise has been shown to help cancer survivors stay well and having had three separate cancer experiences from 1982 to 2017, I try to get as much movement in as I can. Nia is a wonderful practice for healing and for keeping fit. Healing for me, healing for a community, and healing for the world comes into play. In person, with a group that included patients, survivors, caretakers, and related others the classes never failed to have me leave feeling better than when I came in. I know my posture has improved and I stand taller (literally per my doctor) being part of this class, and my cardiologist always tells me to keep doing what I’m doing because I’m in great shape. My oncologist and dermatologist also are happy with me, keeping cancer away. I’m happy to keep dancing for my health!

  • For me, the benefits of Susan’s Nia class are the same as therapy. But a lot “funner”!! I feel more powerful, joyous, beautiful, centered, and healthy after class. Always in a better place afterwards than I was coming in. I am so grateful for this class. No worries about doing it wrong or feeling bad about oneself for any reason. You just can’t lose, and there is so much to gain. Can’t recommend it highly enough!
